Ramu mine - proposed ocean waste dumping

MPI report:
Submarine Tailings Discharge in Astrolabe Bay, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea
A discussion paper commissioned by the Mineral Policy Institute, Sydney, Australia., February 1999.

The proposed Ramu Nickel-Cobalt mine in Papua New Guinea is predicted to release 60 million tonnes of mine tailings into Astrolabe Bay. This action may jeopardise the sustainable livelihoods of thousands of inhabitants who rely upon the Bay and will threaten the base of PNG’s tuna industry. The development has been widely condemned by many PNG based organisations, including the Papua New Guinea National Fisheries Authority, The Nature Conservancy, and the Individual and Community Rights Advocacy Forum for being socially, economically and environmentally unsustainable.
