Unknown Effects

Despite what is known about the impact of the mine there are a lot of problems which are not understood.

The OTML reports show that a lot is not known about:
  • the impact of waste, especially south of Obo
  • the impact of copper along the river system
  • the furthest points down and away from the river at which forest will die
  • the impacts on the varieties of animal, plant and fish species
  • the impacts on plants other than forest plants
  • the amount of food that will be available
  • when the forest is likely to recover.

It is very difficult to know what all of the problems will be. The river is very large and there are many different animals, plants and fish living in and around it.

By the time all the damage is known it may be too late. Some things may not recover. In this kind of situation many governments and NGOs say companies must take action. In this case the action would be to stop waste going into the river.

People know the river is different since mining began. It is important to take action as traditional knowledge tells us the river has changed.

Waste from the Porgera mine also ends up in the Fly river south of Obo.
