Death of Forests and Swamps
The mine is killing the forest and swamplands near the Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers. Forest death is called ‘dieback’. Trees and small plants die from waterlogging. Poisonous chemicals may also kill plants.
The map below shows how much forest may be destroyed. The total area destroyed could be 1350 square kilometers or even up to 2700 square kilometers. The destruction will be worst along small rivers that connect to the Ok Tedi River and south to Obo. South of the Everill Junction the extent of the damage is not known. ![]() ABOVE: Map of the Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers showing the future affected areas. LIGHT GREY colour indicates areas of forest dieback. DARK GREY colour shows the river as well as grassland and swamp areas. Note: this map is based on the BHP pessimistic estimate and is a very real possibility.
