The Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers are very important to people for food and transport.

ABOVE: Waste rock and tailings from the Ok Tedi mine will continue to damage the river, land, forests and people for many years. The problems will get a lot worse even if the mine shuts early.

Mud, gravel and sand in the River

The problems at the Ok Tedi mine are from mine waste. Waste is dumped directly into the Ok Tedi River. Waste also comes from rock dumps which wash into the river.

There is far more mud, gravel and sand washing down the river onto the riverbanks and land around the river than there used to be.

The mine waste spreads over the riverbanks. It covers and kills gardens and forest plants. Each year the problems increase. The waste makes it more difficult and dangerous to travel on the river.

The waste problems will continue for a long time after the mine shuts.
