BHP's Ok Tedi Mine: What Future?
an information factsheet compiled for the NGO Environmental Watch Group, PNG, January, 2000

What is the mine doing to the river and the land?

The Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers are very important to people for food and transport.

ABOVE: The Ok Tedi / Fly River system is very important to people for food and transport. BHP's Ok Tedi mine dumps 80,000 tonnes of waste (called 'tailings') into the river every day.
Introduction
The problems caused by Ok Tedi mine are very serious, and will become worse over the next ten years. Even if the mine shuts the damage will last at least 60 years.

The conditions along the river will grow worse. If Ok Tedi Mining and BHP continue, the mine will shut in 10 to 14 years as there will be no copper left.

People living along the river have problems with:
  • Mud, gravel and sand in the river
  • Death of forests and swamps
  • Fish dying
  • Sago trees dying
