JATAM -Jaringan Advokasi Tambang/Mining Advocacy Network is a network of non-governmental organizations and community organizations working together for the same goal of advocating mining issues in Indonesia. It is a network organization established as a result of Friends of the Earth Indonesia’s (WALHI) mining advocacy workshop held in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan in 1995. The workshop was attended by 45 participants from all corners of Indonesia, including members of Taratak (West Sumatra), LPLH (Aceh), LEWIM (South Kalimantan) and Tanah Merdeka Foundation (Free Earth Foundation, Palu) and also 4 foreign NGO activists. They all recognized the need for a mining advocacy network upon witnessing countless incidents of communities in Indonesia, specifically indigenous communities, bearing a disproportionate share of negative environmental and social consequences from the mining, oil and gas industry. JATAM works in numerous areas in Indonesia and on numerous mining issues. JATAM completed a repositioning workshop in November 1999, in Manado, North Sulawesi. This workshop resulted in JATAM 's strong but much necessary position to cease all new mining activities in Indonesia and to urge the government to revoke all mining licenses/permits given to all mining companies. JATAM 's philosophy of the fair treatment and involvement of all people with respect to basic human rights and environmental policies is the key motivator behind their activities. JATAM 's activities are conducted with the purpose of the establishment of rights for all Indonesians to live in a healthy, productive, happy and most of all sustainable environment. Indonesia has not only endured the destructive practices of mining, oil and gas companies on their land and natural resources but it has also been a victim of a sad and disturbing list of human rights violations including such atrocities as forced evictions to loss of livelihoods to abuses against women and children. JATAM hopes by supporting communities by disseminating information through campaigns, newsletters and press releases, facilitating discussions and transfering skills to those communities impacted by the multinational investors and also by lobbying for policy change, JATAM will be able to give personal empowerment to those who have been at the mercy of global sharks. JATAM 's goals are to support Indonesian communities, especially indigenous communities, against the dehumanization and environmental destruction caused by the invasion of the mining, oil and gas industries.
