WALHI (Indonesian Forum For Environment) Reports Freeport to the Police

TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta :
The government has been asked to immediately force PT Freeport Indonesia to decrease its production following the collapse of the Wanagon lake two weeks ago in Timika. Four mining workers of PT Freeport Indonesia are assumed dead and the inundation destroyed 12 homes in Banti village. PT. Freeport Indonesia (FI) has been accused of committing serious violations in relation to environment control.

The Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for Environment (WALHI), Emmy Hafildz, said this to the press on Monday afternoon (15/5) in WALHI's office in South Jakarta.
According to Emmy, WALHI will report this violation to the National Police Headquarters (MABES POLRI) on Tuesday (16/5). " We are compiling a legal document to submit this incident to the court," Emmy said. In WALHI's opinion, FI has repeatedly manipulated the environmental programs around the mining area.

This action is being taken because FI has been proven incapable of handling its waste. Producing 300.000 tons a day has lead to excessive waste. Meanwhile, Wanagon Lake has been unable to support the waste since 1998, when production stood at 130.000 tons a day. The lake collapsed once before on June 22, 1998.

The waste produced by FI is stone left over from the mining. This waste is called pyrit, which contains heavy metals and is usually classified as toxic waste. According to WALHI, FI has dumped 420 million tons of waste stone since 1995. By the end of the mining contract, it is predicted that the waste will rise 0,5 km out of the ground.

FI dumps the waste in two locations; 95% of it on Wanagon hill, and the rest on Cartenz hill, in the Jaya Wijaya mountain range.

According to Emmy, FI has violated at least four environmental regulations; (UU) No.23/1992, (PP) no. 20/1990, (PP) no. 35/1991 (PP) no. 18/1994.

"The waste dumping in Wanagon mainly violates the 1994 regulation concerning waste" Emmy said. WALHI suspects that FI has intentionally increased its productions because its work contract will end in 2014. "The government should take stern measures because the waste dumping has endangered the lives of Papuans, especially the Amungme tribe," Emmy said.
