A massive cyanide spill has occurred at an Australian-owned gold operation in Romania, killing fish and rendering water undrinkable. The 100,000 cubic metres of cyanide solution has entered River Szamos, then the Tisza river which flows from Romania to Hungary and Serbia then into the Danube. The initial cyanide concentration was reported to be between 325 and 700 times the legal limit. The cyanide is being diluted as it moves down the river, but ongoing fish deaths are reported as the spill flows into Serbia.
