Mineral Sand Mining in the Murray Darling BasinThe Basin.
![]()
The Murray Darling is the world's seventh largest river system and covers a geographical area bigger than France and Spain combined. The Basin contains around 30,000 wetlands many of which are considered important under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (or Ramsar convention). These wetlands include Hattah-Kulkyne Lakes, the Kerang Wetlands, Lake Albacutya, Barmah-Millewa Forests, Chowilla, the Coorong, Gunbower Forest and the Macquarie Marshes. The development also poses a threat to the ecological and cultural integrity of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area which is almost entirely encircled by mining proposals.
The over utilisation and exploitation of the Murray Darling in post colonial Australia is posing a significant challenge to future direction of management of this river system and has become issue of national significance. The proposed new mineral sands mining developments in the Murray Darling Basin are continuing this trend of exploitation. |
